Eldridge Bagley in partnership with MacCallum More Museum & Gardens
A Storyteller Through Art
Eldridge Bagley in partnership with MacCallum More Museum & Gardens (MMMG) celebrates the powerful storytelling and vivid imagery of Eldridge Bagley, a national award-winning artist known for his narrative paintings that beautifully capture the spirit of rural life and Americana.
Bagley’s work is deeply rooted in his experiences growing up in Lunenburg County, Virginia, reflecting the culture and history of Southern life. His paintings resonate with viewers through their emotional depth, vibrant colors, and storytelling quality, preserving memories of a simpler time.
“Through the ages, humans have tended to gather memorable experiences (good and bad) and tuck them away in the mind and heart for ‘safekeeping.’ When certain experiences cry out to be shared, they often find expression through literature, art, and music. I came to realize the truth of this in my own journey as an artist.
“While farming with my parents as a young man in my twenties, I had no idea that art would ultimately become my calling. Neither could I have imagined that the "ordinary" experiences of rural life in Southside Virginia would provide such a rich source of inspiration. Through the years, I have come to realize how the challenges of farming helped prepare me for life as an artist. To be sure, relying on one's art for a living is not without its struggles. Nevertheless, I have found the life of a painter to be quite rewarding, and the realization that my art can speak to the hearts of viewers is even more so.” - Eldridge Bagley
