A Garden Rooted in History

The house, known as MacCallum More, was built in 1929 on 1.24 acres and was the second home in Chase City of Lucy Morton Hudgins and Edward Wren Hudgins, former Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. The name reflects her Scottish heritage and ties to the Duke of Argyll; the head of the Campbell Clan is known as the “MacCallum More.”  Lucy planted her garden, which contained the sunken garden and fish pond beginning in 1929. This was expanded upon by her younger son, William Henry Hudgins, in the 1970s and 1980s into the six acres of gardens that you see today.

Inside the MacCallum More House, locally know as the Hudgins House, you can explore the rich history of the Hudgins family and their contributions to the community. From cherished heirlooms to historic artifacts, each room tells a story of a family dedicated to preserving the beauty and culture of Chase City. Discover more about the Hudgins House here and experience firsthand the legacy that inspired the creation of these beloved gardens.

A Global Vision Brought Home

The gardens as we know them today were created by Commander William Henry Hudgins, affectionately known as Billy, the younger son of Edward and Lucy Hudgins. Billy’s roles as a Commander in the Navy and as Personal Aide to President Truman and Senior Aide to NATO Commander Admiral Robert B. Carney took him across the globe. His travels inspired him to collect treasures, which he integrated into the gardens he built, creating the unique and vibrant space we cherish today.
